Who: Parks & Recreation Director Jason Mangum

What: Mangum, a certified park and recreation professional and site visitor for the Commission for Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies, was recently honored by the Texas Recreation and Park Society—East Region as the 2019 Director of the Year. His leadership of the City’s department was further acknowledged as some of his team members were also recognized by the society: Kevin Browne—Recreation Professional of the Year; Adam Lofters—Rookie of the Year; Daniele Stewart—Innovative Program Award for the Mother/Son Challenge. JasonMIn addition to the TRAPS recognition, Mangum’s commitment to being a high-performance organization leader is respected by his peers nationwide and has resulted in prestigious speaking engagements for the National Recreation and Park Association Congress, the World Leisure Congress and several State and Regional Parks and Recreation Conferences. In his dynamic speeches to industry leaders, peers, young professionals, students and vendors, Mangum has addressed topics such as leadership, team development, risk management and customer service.

“I love parks and recreation programs. I love my career and follow this path of developing and improving green spaces with purpose and passion,” said Mangum, who is also leading his team in an effort to be accredited by the national Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). “I have the utmost respect for my team and the projects we work side-by-side on every day, striving to improve the quality-of-life for Missouri City residents and visitors. Our goal is to have the best fitness, health and wellness initiatives we can and to provide excellent service to our citizens.”

When/Where: Mangum most recently addressed Parks and Recreation associates in September at the 2019 NRPA Annual Conference in Baltimore. He was presented the TRAPS—East Region award in December during the society’s annual awards ceremony.

Why: “Missouri City places a high value on the health and well-being of our citizens and stakeholders and Parks & Recreation has a central role in this area of expertise,” said Assistant City Manager Glen Martel, who oversees Parks & Recreation, Public Works and Development Services. “We salute the Parks & Recreation department for their ongoing dedication to the City’s mission, vision, credo and code of ideals. Their ‘Show Me City’ SPIRIT is essential to operations and maintaining high-quality programs and services.”
