July Is Parks & Rec Month

MCTX Has Planned a Full Month Of Exciting Fitness, Family, & Senior Event


At their Monday, July 2, 2018 Regular Meeting, Missouri City Council Members proclaimed July as Parks and Recreation Month. The “Show Me City” is celebrating all month long with a calendar full of events and programs for MCTX residents of all ages, including free health screenings, a Fit Expo, a blood drive and exciting giveaways that will be hidden in select City parks; follow us on social media to learn how you can win these exciting prizes.

Fourth of July Celebration

  • What: The City’s patriotic tradition that offers plenty of fun and excitement for the whole family. From 6 – 9 p.m., attendees will enjoy a variety of free activities and food for purchase. The fireworks show will begin at 9:15 p.m., and stadium seating will be available at Thurgood Marshall High School.
    • Event parking around Thurgood Marshall High School will be limited; residents are encouraged to take advantage of the free METRO shuttles that will be running from the Park & Ride at 13859 Fondren Rd. starting at 5:45 p.m.
    • Beginning at 3 p.m., event parking traffic will be the only traffic allowed to enter Buffalo Run Boulevard from Texas Parkway/Scanlin Road. After the partial closure, Lakeview Business Park employees and delivery trucks will need to enter the property through the Fondren Road and Willow Oak Drive entrance.
    • All trucks and business park employees coming to Texas Parkway after 3 p.m. will be rerouted to Independence Boulevard to access the Fondren Road entrance. Event signage and City police officers will be posted at the Texas Parkway and Buffalo Run Boulevard intersection.

  • When: 6 – 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4; fireworks show begins at 9:15 p.m.
  • Where: Buffalo Run Park, 1122 Buffalo Run Blvd.

Summer Fitness Series

  • What: Free fitness classes in the park. Class offerings will feature yoga, PiYo and boot camp-style programs. Check out the series’ flyer for specific class times.
  • When: Every Monday, Tuesday and Friday  June 12 – Aug. 10
  • Where: Community Park Pavilion 4, 1700 Glenn Lakes Lane

Summer Tennis Camp

  • What: Beginner-Intermediate and USTA Tournament player camps hosted by King Daddy Sports for 10 weeks throughout the summer. Check out the camp flyer for information on session times, half/full-day options and cost details. Interested participants may register by calling 281.403.8629 or emailing Cristina.Escamos@missouricitytx.gov.

    • Week 7: July 16-20
    • Week 8: July 23-27

Soccer Frenzy

  • What: Free soccer fun at the Recreation and Tennis Center! Attendees should wear shoes and their favorite team’s gear. Staff will host a variety of games, including soccer bowling, Bubble Soccer and more.
  • When: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3
  • Where:  Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.    

Park Prize Pack

  • What: July is Parks and Rec Month, and the City is celebrating with a special scavenger hunt in Missouri City parks. Follow along on the City’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/MissouriCityTX) for clues to find the hidden #parkprizepack. Prizes will be hidden every Wednesday in July starting the 11th.
  • When: Wednesdays, July 11, 18 and 25
  • Where: Various parks in Missouri City  

Tots & Crafts

  • What: Bi-weekly free family events that will feature donuts and coffee for parents and free play and crafts for kids. No registration required.
  • When: 9 – 10 a.m. every other Wednesday morning; the next sessions are being held July 11 and 25.
  • Where:  Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.  

Summer Day Camp

  • What: The sixth annual Summer Day Camp for youth ages 5 – 12 years old, held for the first time at Quail Valley Elementary School. This program offers participants a safe, action-packed summer that is sure to be a memorable one. Each week costs $100 for a regular day and $125 for early risers.   • When:  Monday – Friday, June 11 – July 27
    • Session 5: July 9 – 13
    • Session 6: July 16 – 20
    • Session 7: July 23 – 27
  • Where: Quail Valley Elementary School, 3500 Quail Village Dr.

Wimbledon Social Tournament

  • What: A chance to join friends and fellow tennis players for an evening of tennis and what is sure to be a “jolly good time”. This tournament is a round-robin format – guaranteeing that all entrants get multiple matches. All-white “Wimbledon-style” attire is suggested. Prizes will be awarded to the winning teams. The tournament is $15 per player, with a $5 discount for Recreation and Tennis Center members.
  • When: 7 p.m. on Friday, July 6  
  • Where: Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

Senior Casino Trip

  • What: A chance to travel with great company to the Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder, La. This trip is $10 and has limited capacity – to reserve a spot, register at the Recreation and Tennis Center.
  • When: 7:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10
  • Where: Participants will depart from the Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

Parks & Rec Trivia

  • What: Stop by the Rec & Tennis Center front desk to answer Missouri City Parks & Recreation Trivia questions. Prizes will be awarded to those who answer all questions correctly.
  • When: 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. on July 12, 20 and 24
  • Where: Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

Fitness Expo

  • What: A day full of free fitness fun at the Recreation and Tennis Center. Participants will try out classes for free and visit with local fitness vendors.
  • When: 1 p.m. on Friday, July 13
  • Where: Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

Blood Drive

  • What: A chance to “be a hero” and donate blood to the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. All successful donors will receive a beach towel.
  • When: Stop by anytime from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. on Monday, July 16
  • Where: Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

Afternoon with an Expert: City Forester

  • What: A free special presentation from Missouri City Forester, Paul Wierzbicki about Unique & Elusive Plants. RSVP by calling 281.403.8637.
  • When: 1 – 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17
  • Where: Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

Breakfast Bingo

  • What: Monthly senior bingo for area residents who are ages 50 and older. Attendees will visit with peers, enjoy breakfast and play friendly rounds of bingo for great prizes. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.
  • When: 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 19
  • Where: Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

Mommy & Me Dance Class

  • What: Free dance classes for youth ages 3 – 4 and 5 – 8.
  • When: Saturday, July 21
    • 12 – 12:45 p.m.: Ages 3 – 4
    • 1 – 2 p.m.: Ages 5 – 8
  • Where: Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

Princess Dance Camp

  • What: A Princess-themed dance camp for dancers ages 3 – 10 years old. This camp is $110 per session and will feature arts and crafts, dance and conclude with a showcase performance on the final day of camp. Campers should come dressed in your best princess attire!
  • When: 1 – 5 p.m. from July 23 – 27
  • Where: Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

Ice Cream Social Survey

  • What: A chance to share feedback about the Recreation and Tennis Center, local parks, program offerings and events while enjoying free ice cream in return.
  • When: 1 – 4 p.m. on Monday, July 23
  • Where: Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

Senior Foodies: NOLA Poboys

  • What: A chance to dine with fellow Missouri City seniors at a local restaurants. Newcomers are always welcome. Call 281.403.8637 to RSVP. Participants will meet at the restaurant and pay for their own lunch.
  • When: 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 26
  • Where: NOLA Poboys, 9340 Hwy. 6, Suite 100

Pickledon

  • What: An evening of Pickleball fun. Grab a partner and sign up soon; a maximum of 12 teams is allowed. All-white “Wimbledon-Style” attire is suggested. The registration deadline is Wednesday, July 25. The tournament is $15 per player, with a $5 discount for Recreation and Tennis Center members.
  • When: 7 – 10 p.m. on Friday, July 27  
  • Where: Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

LEGO Summer Camp

  • What: A chance to explore engineering principles by designing and building projects from a galaxy far, far away. Participants will create motorized and architectural projects with imagination and engineering to defeat the Empire. Led by an experienced Play-Well Instructor, space is limited, and pre-registration is required. Camp is $125 per child per week. Call 281.403.8637 to register.  
  • When: July 30 – Aug. 3
    • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. (5 – 7 year olds)
    • 1 – 4 p.m. (8 – 12 year olds)

Free Health Screenings

  • What: Free health screenings hosted by the Grace Family Clinic. Screenings will include blood pressure and finger prick blood glucose tests.  
  • When: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Monday, July 30
  • Where: Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

How Does it Work?

  • What: A tour of the Stafford Centre. Participants will get a behind-the-scenes look and learn about the variety of events held at this venue. On the day of the tour, participants will meet at the Stafford Centre. Call 281.403.8637 to RSVP.
  • When: 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31

Painting Class

  • What: Painting classes taught by professional painter Heather Roy. Classes are held in five-week sessions and are $75; all supplies are provided. Sign up at the Recreation and Tennis Center.
  • When: 9 – 11 a.m. Tuesdays, July 31 – Aug. 28
  • Where: Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

Fencing Classes

  • What: A chance to gain instruction in basic fencing through advanced tactical techniques. Participants will learn footwork, blade work and bouting. Classes are $100 per month; ages 8 and older are welcome to attend. Register by calling 281.403.8637.
  • When: 5 – 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday
  • Where: Community Center, 1522 Texas Pkwy.

Ladies Cardio Tennis

  • What: A chance to improve your game and fitness at the City’s weekly training sessions; $22 for each if there are five or more players and $25 if there are four or fewer players. For more information, call 281.403.8629.
  • When: 9 – 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday
  • Where: Recreation and Tennis Center, 2701 Cypress Point Dr.

Group Piano Classes

  • What: Youth group piano classes offered for children in grades second through fifth. Classes are $85 a month. Students will have fun learning piano basics and how to read music. To register, call 281.403.8637.
  • When:
    • 2nd-3rd grade lessons – 4:45 p.m. on Wednesdays
    • 4th-5th grade lessons – 5 p.m. on Thursdays
