1. Who do I call for customer service if I am on the city contract?

You can call Republic Services at 713-937-9955.

2. What if I live in an apartment or a residential unit using community dumpsters, will I be affected?

No.

3. What is the difference between “Options and Levels”?

“Levels” is in reference to the type of service you want: Automated or Manual collection. “Options” refers to adding recycling to your contract or an additional Poly Cart purchase for Automated service.

4. When will my trash be picked up?

The provider will try to accommodate your current pickup days. Pick up days are: Monday – Thursday, Tuesday – Friday, or Wednesday – Saturday. Holiday pick up will be the following day including Sunday.

5. What is the holiday schedule when trash will not be picked up?

New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

6. Who supplies the containers?

For those with manual service, the resident will supply the 40-gallon container. For those with automated service, the provider supplies one 96 gallon poly cart. Additional poly cart containers may be obtained for $6.95 each per month. Recycling container (18 gallon) supplied free of charge by Republic Services.

7. If I have manual service can I use plastic garbage bags instead of a 40 gallon container or in addition to the 40 gallon container?

Yes. The bags must be tied and sealed properly. The bag limit is 8 with the (2) 40 gallon containers and 10 to 12 bags if you use no containers.

8. What are the dimensions of the 96 gallon poly cart used for an Automated service?

96 gallon Poly Cart – Dimensions = Width 29 3/8 in., Depth 33 7/8 in., Height 40 ¾ in., with a load not to exceed 340 lbs.

9. What City code requirements are there for trash cans?

Store trash cans properly; they cannot be visible from the street. Garbage cans may be placed at the curb after 6 p.m. the day before trash pickup and must be removed no later than 11:59 p.m. on the day of collection.

10. What landfill is used?

Blue Ridge Landfill owned by Republic Services’ parent company, B.F.I.

11. Why was Republic Services selected?

There are several reasons. By state law, cities do not have to have a competitive bid process for certain city services, which include the collection of solid waste. Three years ago the City had a difficult time finding a provider wishing to give the city a proposal on solid waste collection for its contract with about 3,000 homes. Republic was the only provider to do so. They have provided good service. Through the City’s contract and Republic’s direct contracts with HOAs and MUDs in Missouri City, they currently provide 60% of the solid waste collection in our City.

12. Who will bill me?

Your billing process will be through your M.U.D. or the City of Missouri City.

13. When did the ordinance take effect?

The Ordinance O-10-31 was adopted by City Council on July 6, 2010 and became effective on July 14, 2010. Therefore your contract and pricing to compare to the city’s base service rate is your contract price for comparable service as of July 14, 2010. Additional amendments were adopted in Ordinance O-10-38 on October 4, 2010.

14. When can my HOA make a change in election of service level?

An association or utility district authorized to contract for solid waste collection may change the election of the service level to be provided by the city to the entire membership of the association or to the entire resident base of the utility district once per year. Such notice must be submitted to the city manager in writing between August 1 and August 31 to be effective January 1 of the following year.

15. What is Subscriber Service?

Subscriber Service shall mean solid waste collection service, not including city service, pursuant to a solid waste collection agreement whereby a residential unit is billed directly by a solid waste collection service provider and not by an association or a utility.

16. If I am on a Subscriber Service and my rates are lower than the city’s rates, do I have to use the city service?

Yes. All subscribers who receive direct billing by a solid waste collection service provider must convert to the city contract. However, if you are billed through an association or a utility and your service is less than the city’s base rate, then you can keep your current contract.

17. What if my non-subscriber existing contract agreement and any extension provides a lower rate for comparable service than the city’s base service and rate, can I keep my contract?

Yes. The existing contract agreement and any extension may be allowed to continue until the base rate is not lower than the city’s base service rate with comparable service.

18. Are the current solid waste contracts voided if the base rate is higher than the city’s base service rate?

Yes. Any current contract with another provider, whose base rate is more than the city’s base service rate will be void and that subdivision will move to the city’s provider.

19. What is the size of a bulky item?

An item of 3 cubic yards not to exceed the size of a refrigerator.

20. When will bulky items be picked up?

Bulky item pickup for manual service will be provided each service day, of each week. Bulky item pick up for automated service levels 2 and 4 will be once a month on the first Wednesday of every month. Bulky item pick up for automated service levels 5 and 6 will be twice a month.

21. How many bulky items can be picked up?

Bulky pickup for manual service will be twice a week and limited to one (1) bulky item per residence. Bulky service for automated side load service will be limited to four (4) bulky items per residence.

22. What is considered a bulky item?

Stoves, refrigerators (with all CFC removed), water tanks, washing machines, furniture and other similar items, and materials. Not included is construction debris, large dead animals, hazardous waste or stable matter with weights or volumes greater than those allowed for bins or containers, as the case may be.

23. What if the bulky item is considered too big for removal during regular trash days?

A tag will be placed on the item stating that it is too big for removal. There is a phone number on the tag the resident can call to have the larger item removed for a fee.

24. Can a company dispose its recycling or other material at the city recycling center?

No. The City site was designed to accommodate individual recycling uses and is not appropriately equipped to serve as a depository for private collectors who fail to make their own arrangements to dispose of their collections. Additionally, it is prohibited to dump other material at the recycling site.

25. What is included in recycling?

Metal products include: Aluminum cans, food trays and foil, steel and tin cans. Plastic products include: #1 polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE) Examples include disposable soft drink and water bottles. #2. High density polyethylene (HDPE). Examples include milk jugs, liquid detergent bottles, shampoo bottles. #3. Polyvinyl chloride (V or PVC). Examples include cooking oil bottles, beauty aid products and household cleaners. #4. Low density polyethylene (LDPE). Examples include margarine tubs, frozen dessert cups, six and twelve pack rings. #5. Polypropylene (PP). Examples include syrup bottles, yogurt cups, tubs and ketchup bottles. #6. Polystyrene (PS) NOT ACCEPTABLE AS A RECYCABLE PRODUCT. Examples include disposable coffee cups, clam-shell take-out containers. 7#. Polycarbonate (PC) and polylactide (PLA). Examples include baby bottles, reusable water bottles, stain-resistant food-storage containers.

Paper products: including newspaper, cardboard, magazines, catalogs, phonebooks, mail, paperback books, paper bags, chip board, carrier stock, milk, juice cartons and other uncontaminated paper products.
