Independence Park

Overview
Phase I of this park opened in 2000 with access to the main lake for fishing and boating. A parking facility is also open to the public and other amenities will include: courtesy docks, lighting, and signage.
The "corporation" created the detention facility by connecting and combining existing sandpits into several holding ponds. Water from Stafford Run Creek is detained in these lakes during heavy floods to alleviate flooding downstream. In October 1997, the "corporation" officially turned the project over to the City to operate for park purposes. A Master Conceptual Plan was designed by Carter-Burgess, a firm with extensive experience in designing parks and recreation facilities around the state.
The City received a State Boat Ramp Grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to construct the first public boat ramp in Fort Bend County. The grant was a 75/25 matching grant with the City responsible for funding only 25% of the project. Other amenities funded by the grant included parking, courtesy docks, lighting, and signage.
