Annexation

Annexation refers to the process by which a municipality or government entity expands its boundaries to include additional land or areas. In general, annexation involves the transfer of jurisdiction and control of the annexed area from one government entity to another. Through annexation, cities extend their municipal services, regulations, voting privileges and taxing authority to new territory.  By expanding the territory subject to city ordinances, regulations and codes, and improvements, annexation improves the city’s economic base and enables the City of Missouri City to manage growth and development.

Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ)

The Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) is the unincorporated land within three and a half miles of the City of Missouri City boundaries and includes all unincorporated territory that is not located in another city’s municipal boundary or ETJ. It is the area in which the City of Missouri City is the only authorized entity able to annex land. The ETJ enables the City to extend certain regulations to adjacent land where development can affect the quality of life within the city. ETJ regulations help to ensure that subdivisions that may be annexed in the future meet certain minimum standards.
