One of the first steps is to be certified, at a minimum, as a Basic Firefighter in the State of Texas, by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP).
To be eligible for examination and application, you must also be certified, at a minimum, as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Basic, by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

Application Submission & Review Process
In order to be considered for employment, you must have at a minimum, the Basic Firefighter TCFP certification, and the EMT-Basic DSHS certification.
You must also complete the following steps at least 10 days before the next examination date.
- Step 1: Complete an online HR application
- Step 2: Email Civil Serivce Director the completed Civil Service Commission Entry-Level Firefighter Employment & Examination Application (PDF)
Applicants not disqualified from testing, will receive an invitation for examination from the Civil Service Director. The invitation will confirm the examination date, time, and place. It will also contain a Personal History Statement packet for you to complete and sign and then submit during check-in on the examination date.
In order to move on in the application process, you must achieve a passing score of at least 70% on the written examination. If you served in the United States armed forces, received an honorable discharge, and make a passing grade (70%+) on your written examination, you may be eligible to have five points added to your examination grade. To be eligible for these points, you must submit proof of your honorable discharge by providing your DD Form 214, at check-in on the examination date.
If you receive a passing written examination grade, you will then move on to the physical ability examination.
Your passing written exam score and any applicable military points, will determine your ranking on an eligibility list. The eligibility list will be effective for 12 months, unless exhausted earlier. If you do not pass the physical ability examination, you will be disqualified from appointment to the entry-level firefighter position.
