City Manager Odis Jones to Propose Additional $500,000 In Funding for CARES Act Business Grants

At the Monday, October 5 Virtual Regular Meeting, City Manager Odis Jones will propose adding an additional $500,000 to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act Business Grant Program, which would increase the total funds for the program to $1.5 million.

The $500,000 increase is paramount as the number of local businesses needing assistance continues to rise and owners and managers have asked the City for financial aid that will help with rental/lease payments and be vital to companies being able to avoid eliminating jobs and closing their doors.

“Our businesses are a key pillar of our community, and we need to ensure they have some level of financial stability during this pandemic,” Jones said. “This grant program will help business owners pay essential operating expenses and allow companies to remain open, which in turn will continue to drive our economy forward.”

The launch of the grant program is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, October 11, and businesses will be able to apply for grants via the City website: The business grant program follows the CARES Act Rental, Mortgage and Utility Assistance initiative, which was launched on Sept. 28 and allowed residents to apply for financial relief.

The virtual Regular Meeting on Monday, October 5 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Residents and businesses are encouraged to watch City Manager Jones’ presentation to City Council live on MCTV here.
