Missouri City Celebrates Black History Month

bhm full events

MISSOURI CITY, TEXAS (February 1, 2024) - Missouri City is proud to partner with the Edison Arts Foundation for another year to celebrate Black History Month. For the entire month of February, the community is invited to a multitude of events that highlight Black culture, talent, and appreciation!

Black History Month first began as “Negro History Week” in the early 1920s. Carter G. Woodson, who is considered to be the “father of Black History” envisioned a designated time to honor the contributions and achievements of Black people.

Eventually the month of February was selected for Black History Month due to its significance in Black History. Abraham Lincoln, who emancipated the slaves, and Frederick Douglass, a prominent activist and abolitionist, were both born in February.

Missouri City is proud of its own rich Black History. More than 42% of Missouri City’s population is Black, and 30% of registered businesses in Missouri City are black-owned. In 2022, Angel L. Jones, became the first Black female City Manager in Missouri City. Missouri City is also home to the Freedom Tree; a historical landmark where slaves gathered to learn they were freed under the Emancipation Proclamation.
